Introduction
A list of recommended resources collated by the Commons librarians related to The Librarians, a documentary that reveals how librarians in the United States are standing up against sweeping censorship efforts and political intimidation.
These resources were shared at a film screening held in November 2025 in Naarm | Melbourne. The event was hosted by Informit and CAVAL. A panel discussion was held after the film to discuss the film’s themes and their resonance in a local context. The panellists were Holly Hammond from Commons Library, Mali Jorm from Bacchus Marsh Grammar, Angela Savage from Public Libraries Victoria and Sae Ra Germaine from CAVAL.
What can we learn? What can we do? And how do we ensure libraries remain spaces of truth, diversity, and democratic engagement?
About the Film
Librarians emerge as first responders in the fight for democracy and our First Amendment Rights. As they well know, controlling the flow of ideas means control over communities.
In Texas, the Krause List targets 850 books focused on race and LGBTQIA+ stories – triggering sweeping book bans across the U.S. at an unprecedented rate. As tensions escalate, librarians connect the dots from heated school and library board meetings nationwide to lay bare the underpinnings of White Christian Nationalism fueling the censorship efforts. Despite facing harassment, threats, and laws aimed at criminalizing their work – the librarians’ rallying cry for freedom to read is a chilling cautionary tale.
