Organising in the Arab World: Resources from Ahel

Here is a collection of resources about community organising in the Arab World. These resources are from an organisation called Ahel.

Ahel works across the Arab region to support people leading collective action for justice, freedom, and equality to build their people power.

Using a values-based community organizing approach, Ahel coaches campaigns, trains leaders in organizing and participatory leadership, and connects changemakers who share a commitment to dignity and justice.

Ahel produces Arabic-language knowledge on community organizing and documents campaign journeys and successes—sharing real stories of how people power drives change.

Ahel’s methodology is based on Marshall Ganz’s work in value based community organizing adapted and expanded for the context of the Arab speaking region.

أهل هي مؤسسة تعمل في مختلف أنحاء المنطقة العربيّة على تمكين الساعين والساعيات للتغيير من تنظيم قوتهم وقيادتهم لتحقيق العدالة في قضاياهم. ترافق “أهل” الحملات في مشوارها الميدانيّ وعملها الجماعيّ، وتعرّف القياديين والقياديات وتدرّبهم على نهج التنظيم المجتمعي وممارسات القيادة التشاركيّة، ليس فقط لتحقيق التغيير الذي يبتغونه، بل لبناء قوة ناسهم أيضاً. وتشبك “أهل” بين القياديين والقياديات في المنطقة الذين يتشاركون القيم ويؤمنون بكرامة الناس وعدالة قضاياهم.

What is Organising?  | ما هو التنظيم؟

Community organizing is a collective leadership practice where those directly affected by an issue lead efforts to create change in their own causes.

It is based on organizing the community base—people most impacted by the problem—to mobilize their resources and build people power.

Organizing develops leadership from within the base, uniting around shared values to achieve a common goal and lasting change.

التنظيم المجتمعي هو ممارسة قيادية جماعية، يقود فيها أصحاب القضية جهودهم لإحداث التغيير في قضاياهم بأنفسهم.
يعتمد على تنظيم القاعدة المجتمعية، وهي مجموعة الأشخاص المتأثرين مباشرة بالمشكلة، لحشد مواردهم وبناء قوة الناس.
يركز التنظيم على تطوير قيادات من داخل القاعدة، تعمل معًا على أساس قيم مشتركة لتحقيق هدف موحّد وتغيير فعلي ومستدام.

This is the Arabic version of the community organizing notes—reflections on leadership, organizing, and action. They are rooted in lived experience, grounded in academic research, and designed to facilitate the learning process.

You can download the full set of notes in Arabic—including all eight chapters—along with an introductory letter by Professor Marshall Ganz, in which he shares his personal story with community organizing and his journey with these notes.
